Tangentine
How it started
When we moved to Germany I was fully aware that it would be very difficult to find professional work as my German is pretty much non-existent and getting a work permit would take time. Finding it impossible to be idle I decided to focus on making jewellery – one of my hobbies since 2004.
My other concern was that 2 years of not working professionally would dull my mind and I did not want to lose touch with the rapid changes social media was imposing on how the internet works.
Project goal:
- Make and sell jewellery
- Use Tangentine as a sandbox to test branding, design, site development and marketing a small business.
- Understand the challenges of using social media to promote a business instead of just managing them as part of the development schedule for other companies
Overview
Project successes:
- I have a much better understanding of using social media as an indirect marketing tool.
- Becoming part of a community and see how people interact online – thereby being introduced to social selling
- Being forced to focus on the content side of SEO – in my last few professional positions I focused on the technical
Project failures:
Most of the success criteria I set for myself was based on personal development. The only failure I see with the venture was the branding. Using Tangentine as a brand name proved difficult as people don’t remember it. I’ve done analysis on improvements and will launch my jewellery business in South Africa under Jacqueline Fouche Design Studio.
Case studies
I will start posting case studies on what I’ve learnt from running Tangentine on protonode soon.
